Winter forecast, part I: the woolley bear prediction

According to legend, the severity of the upcoming winter can be judged by examining the pattern of brown and black stripes on woolly bear caterpillars--the larvae of Isabella tiger moths. Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, November 21, 2008.
Tropical Cyclone Anika will continue moving southeastward at 17 mph, passing by 50 miles northeast of Cocos Island and will remain southwest of Indonesia on Friday. The system will maintain its strength with 40 mph sustained winds, gusting up to 52 mph, with 8 ft wave heights. Meanwhile in the east, a trough will extend over Japan from a low pressure system lingering in the north on Friday. Expect moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms to remain over northern Japan, while southern Japan will see drier conditions. Tokyo will see mostly sunny skies with a high near 55(F)/ 13(C). The Korean Peninsula will also see mostly sunny skies on Friday.
In China, high pressure will continue to dominate over most of the country, which will allow for plenty of sunshine and mild weather. Expect sunny skies in Shanghai with a high near 60(F)/ 15(C), while Hong Kong will be warmer with a high near 73(F)/ 23(C). However, a low pressure system will develop off of the Tibetan Plateau and trigger widespread scattered showers over central China.
In Australia, a low pressure system will hover over Tasmania on Friday and bring widespread scattered showers to the southern region of New South Whales. Sydney will miss most of these storms and will see partly cloudy skies with a high near 77(F)/ 25(C). Meanwhile in the west, a trough of low pressure will kick up light rain over the coast of Western Australia. Also, a front int he north will produce moderate showers over the region.
